Ticks are from the order Acarina and the suborder: Ixodides.  Ticks are the largest and most conspicuous members of the Acarina.  Although ticks are commonly thought of as insect, they are actually arachnids like scorpions, spiders and mites.

All members of this group have four pairs of legs as adults and have no antennae.  Therefore, they are classified as arachnids and not insects, because adult insects have three pairs of legs and one pair of antennae.   All ticks feed exclusively on blood of vertebrates.  Ticks have four live stages: egg, six-legged larva, eight-legged nymph and adult.

After the egg hatches, the tiny larva (sometimes called a “seed tick”) feeds on the appropriate host.  The larva then develops  into the larger nymph.  The nymph feeds on a host and then molts into an even larger adult.  Both male and female adults find and feed on a host, and then the females lay eggs sometime after feeding.  Some nymphs and adults typically feed on larger animals, including humans and their companion animals.

Fish Moth Pest Control and important fish moth information. Fishmoths fall within two families, the Lepismatidae and the Nicoletiidae. The former family contains the most familiar-looking species and these have compound eyes.

Ctenolepisma longicaudata is the most common species found in homes where it consumes paper, glue of bindings, starched clothing and any dry foods. This species was introduced to South Africa prior to 1900. The nicoletiids are only found in ant and termite nests and have no eyes.

Capable of thriving in most climates, silverfish prefer to dwell in dark, damp areas such as basements, attics, kitchens and bathrooms. They are especially attracted to paper and damp clothing. Commonly found in stored boxes in garages and sheds.

Silverfish are known for their destructive feeding habits, oftentimes ruining papers, clothing and wallpaper. Silverfish feed on carbohydrates, particularly sugars and starches. Cellulose, shampoos, glue in books, linen, silk and dead insects may be food sources. They have been found in unopened food packages.
